Bamboos frighten me. Apart from the unfamiliar names, I don’t trust them to behave. A gift of an unnamed plant rampaged through my previous garden, defeating all attempts to control it. This one, though, is more self-controlled, covering little more than a metre in four years. I was initially attracted to the way the sulfur-yellow stems glow throughout the year. Even on grey days they radiate a luminescence that by February is desperately welcome. The new shoots have a pink sheen to them and in the spring some of the stems also turn pink.
